Canada is rich in food and incredible people who help put food on our tables. This idea to celebrate and promote the incredible food in Canada was a key principle for Anita Stewart, cookbook author, food laureate, champion of Canadian farmers, chefs and cooks, culinary activist and founder of Food Day Canada. Anita passed away in 2020. Thank you Anita, for being our guiding light and for all you did to shine a light on the great food grown and prepared here!
The celebration that Anita started and championed continues on with Food Day Canada. On the first Saturday in August each year, Canadian farmers, chefs and cooks are invite all Canadians to come together to enjoy our Canadian cuisine and give thanks to the people who make it happen. Take the pledge to cook, dine and eat like a Canadian!
What is Food Day Canada?
Food Day Canada is our nation’s largest and longest-running celebration of Canadian food. It’s an opportunity for all Canadians to show their support for our chefs, farmers, fishers and producers, and to celebrate the culinary diversity of Canadian food. Founded in 2003, Food Day Canada is an opportunity for Canadians to talk about our regional and national food systems and showcase Canadian ingredients, producers, and culinary prowess. It’s also a day to explore ideas of food sovereignty and food security, in recognition that we still have work to do in our communities, and on a national level.
