Chicken Nutrition and Health

  3. Chicken Nutrition and Health

Protein

Protein is an essential nutrient that gets a lot of attention in health and nutrition. This discussion is for good reason. Every single cell in your body needs protein.

There are 2 types of dietary protein:

  1. A complete protein is found in animal sources of protein like chicken, beef or pork. Chicken is a great option because it is also low in trans and saturated fats. Complete proteins contain all the essential amino acids we need to build protein in our bodies.
  2. An incomplete protein does not have all the essential amino acids that the body requires. Incomplete proteins are plant sources such as nuts, beans, lentils and grains. Often combining different sources of plant proteins will help make a more complete protein.

Food Synergy

Food synergy is also known as the “meat factor”. Some animal protein on our plates will increase the amount of iron we absorb from plant sources by a whopping 150%. So not only are you getting the unique nutritional benefits each protein food has to offer, but also this added synergy benefit too.

Other Important Nutrients

Chicken is more than just protein. It has several different vitamins and minerals.

  • Potassium: skinless chicken breasts are a great source of potassium which helps maintain healthy blood pressure.
  • Zinc: dark meat cuts are a great source of zinc, which supports the immune system.
  • Iron: dark meat cuts are a great source of iron, which helps the body produce red blood cells.
  • Phosphorus: chicken is a great source of phosphorus, which helps build bones and teeth.
