Ever been confused by the variety of choices in the egg section of the grocery store? Me too. We are extremely blessed here in Canada to have such numerous choices for food, including eggs. Since so many choices exist, farms need to adapt to the changing demands as well. This results in various different production systems for egg farmers: traditional housing, enriched housing, free-run, free-range or the system we use in our barn, a free-run aviary style system. Each of these systems has their own pros and cons, but all are necessary to meet the needs of different consumers. One thing is a guarantee: all these production methods on Canadian farms must be certified in the national Egg Quality Assurance program, which is third-party audited and upholds animal care and food safety standards. Canadians can count on these high standards in any carton of eggs they choose.
